Terrorism Forces LMC to Suspend League Matches in Maiduguri

Unceasing terrorist attacks have caused the League Management Company (LMC) to announce the indefinite suspension of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) matches in Maiduguri.

As contained in a statement from the office of the chairman of the LMC, the body has acted upon current security intelligence.

Several deadly attacks by the dreaded terrorist group Boko Haram have been recorded in the state in recent weeks.

“We are constrained to put on hold all Premier League games in Maiduguri until further notice due to latest security intelligence from the area and the suspended games include this weekend’s match between El-kanemi Warriors and Abia Warriors,” the statement read.

“Once again, we want to reassure clubs that decisions of the LMC at all times will be guided by the need to serve the greater good and hinged on existing realities.”

Meanwhile Maiduguri-based El-kanemi Warriors, who are due to host newly-promoted side Abia Warriors, in the weekend’s Matchday 2 fixture of the Glo Premier League, have opted to play their home games in Kano, reports MTNFootball.com.

The club did set up a pre-season training camp in Kano before kick-off of the new season.

Many had joked about their fourth-place finish in the previous season as an evidence of other teams’ fear of the terrorist activities-ridden state, after winning all but one of the matches played at the Maiduguri stadium last season.

El-kanemi will now look to count on the support of their Kano fans, following Friday’s suspension.
