Shola Ameobi scored as Newcastle United suffered a fifth successive Premier League defeat for the first time in the club’s history.

Ameobi, 33, placed the ‘Magpies’ ahead on 23 minutes, turning to beat goalkeeper Michel Vorm into the bottom corner, following a link-up play with on-loan striker Luke de Jong.

The goal, the Nigeria international’s first since December 2012, brought the St. James’ Park faithful alive, but the Swans had plans of their own.

United struggled to keep their one-goal advantage going into the interval, but Wilfred Bony came up with a response for the Welsh club and doubled his tally late on to increase pressure on the hosts’ manager Alan Pardew.

Ameobi’s other strike this season came in a league cup win over Morecambe in August 2013.
