Court Remands Man, 32, For Rape

An Osogbo Magistrate court has ordered a 32-year-old man, Bakare Keji,  to be remanded in Ile-Ife prison custody for allegedly raping a seven-year-old girl.

STOP+RAPEThe accused, was said to have committed the offence on April 4, at Agala Area of Ikire in Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State.

The police prosecutor, Wilson Mireti, told the court that the accused unlawfully assaulted his victim and had carnal knowledge of her without her consent.

He said the offence was contrary to section 31(1) of the Criminal Child’s Rights and punishable under Sub-section two of the Laws of Osun state of Nigeria, 2003.

However, counsel to the accused person, Mr Babatunde Olalekan, urged the court to grant the suspect bail.

Objecting to the bail applications, the police prosecutor opposed the bail application; saying granting the accused person bail would jeopardise the ongoing investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the state police command.

In his ruling, Magistrate Olalekan Aluko, however, ordered that the accused person be remanded in Ile-Ife prison custody till May 5, 2014.
