DSS HQ Shootout: IYC Fingers Moles In Security Agencies, Calls For Sweeping Changes

sss-attackSunday’s attempted jailbreak at the heavily fortified headquarters of the Department of State Security by detained members of the Boko Haram sect in which a shoot-out ensued resulting in the death of 21 insurgents and serious injury to two Service operatives, has been described as an act of sabotage by the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC).

The umbrella body for Ijaw youths worldwide also called for a massive overhaul of the security agencies.

In a statement issued by its Spokesman, Eric Omare, the IYC said the reported gun-fight between the insurgents and security operatives few kilometres away from the nation’s seat of power was a joke taken too far.

The IYC said though there were conflicting accounts of the incident, it insisted that there were saboteurs within the security circle, aiding the insurgents.

The statement reads in part: “There is no explanation for Boko Haram members having the effrontery to confront security agencies for more than three hours at the heavily fortified DSS headquarters very close to the Presidential Villa, nation’s seat of power.

“The IYC notes that there have been reports of countless cases of security agencies taking positions on Boko Haram and before the plans are carried out, the security information would leak to Boko Haram members.

“Furthermore, there have also been reported cases of military checkpoints being removed few minutes to Boko Haram attacks without any response from the security agencies until Boko Haram members would have completed their attacks. The Yobe attack on the Federal Government College easily comes to mind”, the statement said.
