A man with an all encompassing need for Speed has committed his entire life to a single pursuit – collecting every VHS copy of the movie Speed in the world.
He already owns 550 tapes of the movie, and isn’t stopping there. He’s begun a Kickstarter campaign to deck out his van like the film’s famous bus so he can travel the country to find more copies.
His obsession started when he bought six copies of the film at a pawn shop in 2006, and has raced out of control since then.
“One time I bought 30 copies from a store,” Beitz told his local TV station KREM. “A lot of people just donate them to me, they send them from all over. I’ve got a few from Japan. I would buy them all off of Amazon, but the shipping costs $4 when the copy costs a penny. It’s ridiculous.”
In the video for his Kickstarter campaign, which currently stands at $1,353 of its $2,500 goal, Beitz admits the speedometer in his van doesn’t work very well, so he has no idea if he’s staying above 50mph while he travels the country in search of tapes.
The funding deadline for the project is June 10th, 2014 – the 20th anniversary of the film’s release.
If you have a copy of Speed on VHS, and want to help out with Beitz campaign, you can find the address to post them to on his Kickstarter page.
