Dame Patience Jonathan, President Goodluck Jonathan’s spouse, confirmed on Monday she still supports the Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, in his bid to take over from the Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi in 2015.

Minister Wike, former Chief of Staff for Governor Amaechi, has been at loggerheads with the governor since the latter became involved in a conflict with President Jonathan and his wife.

It is worth noting that Mrs. Jonathan also hails from Rivers State.

Reacting to indications that she was planning to install three governors in Bauchi, Bayelsa and Rivers states, she issued an official statement addressing the question. The statement, signed by her media assistant Ayo Adewuyi, stresses that the President’s wife has no role in selection process of the PDP. However, Minister Wike is the leader of the PDP in Rivers State, and she, together with the people of the state, are “solidly behind” and prepared to follow him. According to the statement, Patience Jonathan has not withdrawn her support for the Minister and continues to work for the interest and the good of River State residents.

Reports saying otherwise were dismissed as untrue in the statement, described as the handiwork of “mischief-makers”. Mrs. Jonatan appeals to governors of Bayelsa and Bauchi states to ignore such attempts to disrupt peace.

The First Lady is “a mother of peace” who believes in the supremacy of the PDP and democratic principles and she would not abandon her friends because of politics, wheter they are contesting or not, the statement reads.

Nigerians are urged not to be “swayed by the actions of mischief-makers”.
