Boko Haram can’t force Jonathan to abandon power – Kinsmen

President Goodluck Jonathan’s kinsmen said on Thursday that the activities of Boko Haram would not force their son to abandon the mandate given to him by Nigerians.

The people of Ijaw under the aegis of Kalabari Ijaw Stakeholders described the wanton destruction of lives and property by the Boko Haram sect as an attempt to intimidate and force President Goodluck Jonathan to relinquish power.

President of the group, Chief Precious Elekima, who condemned the abduction of Chibok school girls by the terrorist group, cautioned that President Jonathan would not be discouraged from his plans to transform the nation.

Elekima, who spoke with newsmen shortly after a meeting with members of his group, expressed optimism that Nigeria would come out stronger despite its current travails in the hands of the violent Islamic group.

“These acts of mass murder and destructions were intended to frighten our President and nation into chaos and submission to abandon the Nigerian democratic mandate.

“If Boko Haram sought to intimidate our President and the nation to shake him from the plans to transform Nigeria, it should be pretty clear to them that they have chosen the wrong person and country to do it to.

“President Jonathan will not be dissuaded and discouraged and Nigeria will come out stronger and more determined to lead the people to prosperity,” Elekima, who read out a statement signed by him and six others, added.

The Kalabari Ijaw Stakeholders’ President, however, called on political parties and Nigerians in general to support the Federal Government in its fight against terrorism, even as he lauded the military for their courage in defending the country.

He said, “In recent days, the world has seen for itself the state of the nation. On April 14, 2014, we woke up with outrage and heartbroken story of the abduction of nearly 300 girls from Chibok, Borno State.

“This is not an isolated case for Nigeria. It is an affront that stares at the world. Boko Haram can wreck lives and structures of innocent people, but they cannot touch the foundation of the great country called Nigeria.

“Boko Haram is to terror what the mafia is to crime, but their goal is not making money; their goal is remaking the world and imposing their radical beliefs against western education and modern civilization on Nigerian and the world.”
