Suspected Boko Haram gunmen on Thursday waylaid travelers along the Maiduguri – Beneshiek – Damaturu road, slaughtering 10 commuters and motorists, while about 7 vehicles abandoned by fleeing occupants, were seized.

Maiduguri – Beneshiek – Damaturu road has become a highway to the grave for many unsuspecting and defenseless travelers, particularly last year, when terrorists laid in ambush, killing over 50 passengers and motorists, while setting over 20 vehicles ablaze.

According to Vanguard sources, “the gunmen suspected to have been from Sambisa Forest enroute a new destination attempted to cross over the busy road Thursday evening, and on sighting vehicular movement, ordered drivers of two vehicles to stop, and when the drivers refused, they opened fire on the vehicles.

“Immediately when the terrorists rushed to the ill-fated vehicles, they opened fire on the occupants before using knives to slaughter ten of them”, one source said.

Continuing, “Some motorists upon sighting the danger had to make u-turn and quickly drove to Maiduguri, while others found their way back to Beneshiekh and Damaturu, where they reported the incident to security operatives”.

He added that, although, the security personnel responded almost immediately by mobilizing to the scene where they succeeded in killing some of the terrorists in an exchange of gunfire, others fled into the surrounding bush.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Borno State, DSP Gideon Jubrin, denied knowledge of the incident but a top security source, when contacted, confirmed the incident adding that, “about 10 people were killed while some vehicles were seized on Maiduguri- Beneshiekh road by suspected terrorists on Thursday evening”.
