Falcons Trounce Rwanda in Ginsenyi

Nigeria’s senior women’s national football team, the Super Falcons, on Saturday, thrashed Rwanda 4-1 in the first leg of their African Women Championship qualifier, played in Ginsenyi on Saturday.

Asisat Oshoala opened scoring for the eight-time champions in the 37th minute, when his powerful volley from inside of the box beat the hosts’ goalkeeper.

Desire Oparanozie increased the Falcons’ tally three minutes later.

Despite going into the interval with a much-deserved lead, the visitors’ lack of precision in vital areas was of utmost concern for coach Edwin Okon in his half-time talk.

On resumption of play, Esther Sunday cleverly dribbled Rwanda goalkeeper to neatly bury her low shot into the net for Nigeria’s third.

The hosts pulled one goal back in the 65th minute, courtesy of Clementine Mukamana’s free-kick, which caught Precious Dede on her heals.

The Falcons piled upfront soon after and succeeded in restoring their two-goal cushion, as Oparanozie converted from 12 yards after she was fowled in the She-Amavubi’s goal area.
