Osun Governorship Polls Can’t Be Rigged — INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, yesterday assured that the August 9 governorship poll in Osun State would be free and fair to all the parties, saying it had put in place measures that would make it difficult for politicians to rig.

INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner REC, Dr Rufus Akeju, while declaring open a two-day workshop organised by the Osun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in collaboration with a non-governmental organisation, Democracy Vanguard, said the election would be monitored by election observers from both within and outside the country.

Both the ruling party in the state, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the main opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have at one time or the other accused each other of planning to rig it.

While Governor Rauf Aregbesola will be hoping his road and beautification projects will be enough to win him votes, PDP’s flag bearer, Senator Iyiola Omisore will be relying on the votes of disgruntled government workers, some of who have complained of irregularity in salary payment.
