Spanish Midfielder Thiago Alcantara to Miss World Cup 2014

FC Bayern Munich have announced that Spain midfielder Thiago Alcantara will miss the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil, as a result of a torn ligament in his knee.

Alcantara, who has been out since March with a different ligament injury, suffered the new setback in training ahead of Saturday’s DFB Cup final against Borussia Dortmund.

“It’s a bitter blow for Thiago,” Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, said. “We all feel really sorry for him. He’s a young lad who’s been working hard on his comeback and towards the World Cup in his father’s homeland – and then it’s suddenly all taken away from him.”

The 23-year-old was named in coach Vicente Del Bosque’s provisional 30-man World Cup squad, after being restricted to just 16 league appearances in his debut Bundesliga season as a result of injury. The former FC Barcelona player will now undergo surgery.

“We’ll really make sure we look after him in the weeks ahead and do everything we can to get him fit for the start of the 2014/15 season,” Rummenigge added.
