Sydney FC Wants Shola Ameobi

Shola Ameobi could be headed for the A-League after the World Cup, according to a Press Association report, which suggests Sydney FC have opened talks with the Newcastle veteran’s representatives.

The 32-year-old striker was named in Nigeria’s final 23-man squad for the World Cup on Monday night.

Ameobi has put his professional football career on hold, saying he will decide on his next club after making his maiden appearance with the Super Eagles in Brazil.

However, with Sydney looking to replace veteran former Italian international Alessandro Del Piero, the Zaria-born footballer could be on his way out of England, where he was raised.

Hull city manager Steve Bruce have also revealed his admiration of the player, who made a total of 402 senior appearances for the ‘Magpies’ and scored 79 goals.

It is yet unknown if the lure of playing in the Europa League could mean more to the player, as against a first-team appeal in Australia.

Ameobi has scored 2 goals in 6 international caps for Nigeria.
