United favorites to sign Miranda

Manchester United are closing in on a deal to sign Atletico Madrid defender Miranda, who has also been linked with a possible move to Barcelona.

The Brazilian centre-back possesses
a £24.2 million buyout clause and is allegedly keen to leave the La Liga champions.

Sport Witness cites a report in Spanish newspaper AS on Wednesday which claims that interest from Camp Nou could be futile because the 29-year-old
has already set his sights on a move to Old Trafford.

Defensive reinforcements needed
Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal is in desperate need of defensive reinforcements this summer following
the respective departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, and will press ahead with plans to bring the South American stopper to England with the
Daily Star intimating that Manchester United have already offered Miranda a huge contract to lure him from the Vicente Calderon.

Diego Simeone will be desperate to retain Miranda’s services ahead of next season and according to Marca Los Rojiblancos are still confident of keeping
him, even after the player approached senior club officials about the possibility of leaving this transfer window.

Miranda was unlucky not to be involved in Brazil’s World Cup plans after a stunning season with Atletico Madrid last term, and along with team-mate Filipe Luis has a right to feel aggrieved at his
omission from Luiz Felipe Scolari’s 23-man squad.

The World Cup snub might play some part in the former Sao Paulo star’s desire to leave Spain, with the opportunity to test himself in the Premier League
arguably a move that could put him in the spotlight for a potential call-up in the future.

If Miranda were to help revive Manchester United’s fortunes under Van Gaal’s tutelage, then he would likely improve his reputation further, even after a successful campaign that delivered the La Liga title and place in the Champions League final in 2013/14.{GMS}
