World number one Serena Williams secured a comprehensive win over South Africa’s Chanelle Scheepers.
The top seed dispelled Scheepers’ hopes 6-1, 6-1 in just 49 seconds to progress to the third round.
Williams will face 25th seed Frenchwoman Alize Cornet in the next round after the latter beat Petra Cetkovska of the Czech Republic 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
The five-time champion was in complete control throughout against the 30-year-old world number 94. She served eight aces and did not face a break point on her own serve.
2004 Champion Maria Sharapova was also in cruise control in her victory over Swiss qualifier Timea Bacsinszky.
The Russian needed an hour on the dot to see off her opponent 6-2, 6-1.
“I don’t like to dwell on what happened in the past. Last year was unfortunate, I want to change that,” said Sharapova, referring to her second round ouster at the All England Club last year.
Up next for the reigning French Open champion is a third round meeting with American Alison Riske, who beat Italy’s Camila Giorgi 7-5, 6-2 at in Court 7 earlier on Thursday.
Former world number one Ana Ivanovic was a 6-4, 6-0 winner over China’s Jie Zheng, who was a semi-finalist in 2008.
