Lately, I’ve had a persistent case of the sads. Over the last several weeks, I’d stopped answering most calls from friends and family and become increasingly recluse. It came to a point where my friends threatened to show up at my house and force me out (one of them may or may not have actually done this). I know I’m not the only person in the history of ever to experience feelings of overwhelm and sadness. I also know that it’s not uncommon for these feelings to go overlooked as we continue to press on with our day to day activities; That’s why I put together this list of 11 ways to cheer yourself up when you’re feeling down. Try one, two or all of these ideas and get your happy back!
1. Shake your groove thang: We all have that one song that when it comes on you can’t help but dance and sing along. Make a mix of your favorite songs and get those hips movin’ and booty shakin’. Even if you look like a drunken frog when you’re dancing, you’ll be having fun.
2. Take a walk: A change of scenery can be a great mood booster. Walk around your neighborhood, stroll through the mall or head to a local park.
3. Break a sweat: It’s no secret that exercise increases endorphins. Endorphins produce a positive feeling and the results of working out (looking and feeling better) will boost self esteem. #winning
4. Get crafty: Whether it’s, painting, sewing, pottery or making jewelry, tapping into your creativity can be a fun way to lift your spirits.
5. Laugh: Watch one of your favorite comedies, or read entries on a favorite funny website. When I need a good belly laugh, I’ll watch a classic comedy like Coming to America or head over to Awesomely Luvvie and laugh myself to (good) tears.
6. Use a land-line: Call up some friends, order some takeout, pick a favorite movie and just hang. No need for a serious conversation (unless you’re in the mood), just have fun and enjoy the company of the people who make you smile.
7. Get inspired: Start a Pinterest board of inspirational quotes or images that you can sift through when you need them. Here’s one of my recent faves:
8. Focus on the light: When you’re in the middle of the storm, it can be so hard to keep your focus on the clear skies ahead. Take some time to make a list of the things that are good in your life or of the things you want to accomplish (or both). Focusing on the desired result will help put things into perspective.
9. Be still: Pray, meditate or just sit quietly and focus on all that you have to be grateful for.
10. Take back your power: Remember this, true happiness comes from within. The only person who can make you happy is you. Keep in mind that the actions of other people can only make you feel how you allow them to.
11. Don’t be afraid to get professional help: Sometimes we just can’t shake those feelings of overwhelm or sadness. If you’ve tried everything you can think of to lift your spirits, it may be time to turn to an expert. There is no shame in seeking out a professional to help you work through whatever is making you feel down.
