TimesLive, made it known that the bear, Wang died while he was being nursed by chief veterinarian Dr Brett Gardener due to liver and heart failure. The zoo’s spokeswoman Jenny Moodley said in a statement that Wang was diagnosed with liver ailments in November 2010. Although Wang was born in 1984, he arrived at the zoo in 1986 as part of a conservation exchange programme with a zoo in China.

“At 30 years polar bears are considered to have reached their full lifespan for the species.”

Wang’s partner for 27 years, GeeBee, died of natural causes in January”, Moodley said.

Wang’s keeper,  Agnes Maluleke who is not happy about his death had made sure that the last days of the bear counted as  enrichment programmes and special treats, including his own Valentine’s Day celebration were marked and celebrated. Moodley revealed further that the zoo had determined not to replace the aging polar bears even before their deaths. A tribute will be done in honor of Wang, where the Zoo Trot will be dedicated  on September 14 to him.
