There was pandemonium at a popular viewing centre along Sani Abacha Road in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital in the early hours of yesterday, August 25, when a 26-year-old man was crushed to death while watching the Super Falconets of Nigeria and Germany Under-20 Female World Cup final.
The incident occurred at about 1.30 a.m while he was watching the match alongside other viewers who scampered for safety.
Most of the eyewitnesses could not explain how the driver of the Honda Sports Utility Van, SUV crashed into the crowd of football fans and fun seekers in the bar.
It was gathered by Vanguard that the driver of the car rammed into the crowd as he attempted to drive out of the car wash section of the bar where the vehicle was parked.
“The driver must have stepped fully on the accelerator and drove straight at us. I and some other dived out of his path but the boy was unlucky. The vehicle crushed him and dragged him into the club,” an eyewitness said.
Another customer identified simply as Biggy escaped death by the whiskers while two other girls were said to have sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital.
It would be recalled that during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, three Chinese football fans reportedly died after staying up all night to watch matches broadcast from Brazil.
