Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to return to Real Madrid’s starting lineup for Monday night’s La Liga opener at home to promoted Cordoba.
The Portuguese superstar suffered a back injury in the home leg of the Spanish Super Cup final against Atletico Madrid.
After stealing a 1-1 draw in that encounter courtesy of summer signing James Rodriguez’s late strike, Ronaldo came off the bench in Friday’s return leg at the Vicente Calderon, which ‘Los Merengues’ lost by a lone Mario Mandzukic goal to hand off the trophy 2-1 on aggregates.
“He trained well and he’s available,” said Real coach Carlo Ancelotti.
“His pre-season was not very regular because he needed individual work to resolve his niggles.”
Real conceded the Spanish Primera Division title to neighbours Atletico, largely due to their dwindled form in the latter part of the three-team title run-in which also included arch rivals Barcelona.
Ancelotti’s men realised a 12-year-long wait for ‘La Decima’- a tenth European Cup triumph- by beating Atletico in May.
The Italian boss added: “We will try to improve this year. Last season we came very close to winning the Liga and we ran out of steam at the end.
“The solution we are looking for is to be both fast and solid. This team won’t have a problem scoring goals. We won’t have problems in that area.”
The Santiago Bernabeu outfit signed some significant names in the close season, like; Toni Kroos from Bayern Munich, Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas alongside Rodriguez.
