The deadly Boko Haram sect today attempted to expand its caliphate to another major Borno town, Bama, but met stiff resistance from the Nigerian army.
70 members of the terrorist sect were said to have been killed by the army.
A top security official in Maiduguri confirmed the attack but did not give casualty figure or state which side suffered more damage.
The security official, who did not want to be named as he was not officially cleared to speak told Premium Times; “We are still on top of the situation and GOC had assured a beef up of troops from Maiduguri,” although the online media reported that a local vigilante personnel, Abbas Gava, said his colleagues in Bama had informed him that over 70 members of the Boko Haram terrorists group died in the first attack that took place in the early hours of Monday.
“They killed over 70 Boko Haram terrorists and injured about 30 of them,” he said.
The 7 Division of the Nigeria Army in Maiduguri have extended curfew in the city, which had hitherto commenced at 9pm by two hours.
The Division’s spokesperson, Sani Usman, who issued the statement, said the curfew now starts by 7pm to 6am.
The terrorist group which just last week declared a caliphate in Gwoza, a town 135 kilometres from Maiduguri, attacked Bama, one of the largest town in the troubled state with a population of over 500,000 and a distance of 78 kilometres away from Maiduguri on Monday morning but suffered heavy casualty from the Nigerian Army in a crossfire.
According to a security source which preferred anonymity, 59 of about 200 insurgents who invaded the town were killed.
He said over 30 insurgents were also injured with various bullet wounds as the majority of the terrorists were compelled to retreat through the bush.
