BVB vs Arsenal: Gunners Will Be Fine Without Debuchy

Arsene Wenger expects Arsenal to cope in the absence of their injured right-back Mathieu Debuchy.

The France defender needed oxygen before he was stretchered off the pitch after his ankle buckled following a header in the 81st minute of the 2-2 draw with Manchester City at the Emirate Stadium.

Speaking at his pre-game conference before the trip to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night, Wenger said the 29-year-old’s scan on Monday will determine the time frame for his recovery

“Hopefully there is good news after his scan today and he is back soon,” said Wenger.

He admits his resources are stretched in the defence, but however insists there are replacement for the summer signing from Newcastle.

“In defence the Debuchy injury puts us a little bit in a situation where we do not want more,” he explained.

“We have Chambers who can play in different positions, Monreal can play centre back and we also have Bellerin who I think is now ready to play.”

Meanwhile, Nacho Monreal did not make the trip to Dortmund, while Calum Chambers faces a late assessment for the Group D opener.

“Monreal has a back problem, he should be available on Friday. We’ll assess Chambers tomorrow morning. At the moment he’s 50/50 with tonsillitis,” said Wenger.

It will be the second successive meeting between both sides. Last season, coach Jurgen Klopp’s men claimed a 2-1 win in London, but the ‘Gunners’ replied with a 1-0 win in Germany courtesy of an Aaron Ramsey winner.

Dortmund are without numerous key players including Marco Reus, and captain Mats Hummels.

The ‘Black and Yellows’ beat Freiburg 3-1 in the Bundesliga on Saturday with Shinji Kagawa getting among the goals on his first appearance since returning to the club from Manchester United.
