Glo Premier League: Pillars Surge Clear in Title Race

Defending champions Kano Pillars created a five point lead at the summit of the Glo Premier League standings on Sunday following their 2-0 home win over Lobi stars.

Goals from Theophilus Afelokhai and Azeez Shobowale were sufficient to take ‘Sai Masu Gida’s’ point haul to 50 after 29 rounds of matches.

Goalkeeper Aflokhai opened scoring for the hosts in the 9th minute, slotting from 12 yards after Shobowale was hacked down inside the box.

Shobowale doubled scores for coach Okey Emordi’s side’s on 26 minutes to keep hopes of a third successive Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title alive.

Enyimba and Heartland secured solitary points apiece in a thrilling ‘Oriental Derby’ in Aba. Both sides struggled to make clinical touches in the final third, with veteran forward Emeka Nwana failing to tap home a 21st-minute effort from close range.

A huge Emeka Ogbu goal-line clearance in injury time proved effective in preventing the ambitious hosts from stealing the show late on.

Six-time champions Enyimba maintained their third-place birth on 44 points while the ‘Naze Millionaires’ are ranked in tenth place, three points shy of their hosts.

Sunshine Stars captain Sunday Abe missed a spot kick as the ‘Akure Gunners’ played out a stalemate with visiting Akwa United.

Samuel Agba scored for Enugu Rangers, who continued a 4-game unbeaten streak with a 1-0 win over troubled Taraba FC at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium.

The win took the ‘Flying Antelopes’s’ point haul to 41 on 11th position while Taraba are down in 19th position with 34 points.

Warri Wolves’ Gbolahan Salami will have the chance to add to his 14 goals on Monday morning (9AM), after their Match Day 29 clash with Abia Warriors was postponed due to a waterlogged Warri Township Stadium pitch.
