Seattle Sounders Sign Onyekachi Apam

Seattle Sounders have signed defender Onyekachi Apam for an undisclosed fee in a Major League transfer deadline day acquisition.

The 27-year-old Nigeria international’s transfer is subject to acquisition of his work permit.

“Onyekachi brings vast experience from French Lique 1 and the Nigerian National Team,” said Sounders FC sporting director Chris Henderson.

“He is a versatile defender who can play central or wide and has the ability to start our attack from the back as well.”

Apam began his youth career with the Pepsi Football Academy before joining Enugu Rangers in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

Following his successful trial with OCG Nice Apam moved to the French side in 2005, whee he went on to make 105 appearances before switching to Rennes in 2010. He made 23 appearances for Rennes between 2010 and 2014.

Apam has made 128 appearances in France’s Ligue 1 for Stade Rennes and OCG Nice. The center back has also appeared 14 times for the Nigerian national team and won a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

He joins compatriot Obafemi Martins at the club. Sounders are away at New York Red Bulls on Saturday.
