Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has expressed satisfaction with the performances of his new signings in the 4-0 win over Queens Park Rangers on Sunday.
Angel Di Maria reassured the faithful of his immense qualities on his Old Trafford debut, opening the floodgate early on when his free-kick into the box bounced inside the far post.
The Argentine’s run then drew the attention of two defenders, allowing Rooney to send the ball to the part of Herrera, who drilled a low shot into the bottom corner.
United’s first maximum points under the Dutch boss were all but sealed before the interval, as Rooney buried the ball inside the near post with less than a minute to the break. The goal took the skipper’s tally to 175; joint-third on the all-time top scorers’ list with Thierry Henry.
“The first goal is very important, we trained with it before the game but he (Di Maria) did it at the right moment. I think the new players fitted in very well. It’s always difficult to come in and adapt to the rhythm of the Premier League but they did very well – not only Di Maria,” said Van Gaal.
Mata rounded off scoring few minutes into the second-half, steering an ambitious Di Maria’s shot into the back of the net.
Marcos Rojo, fresh from receiving his work permit, played the full 90 minutes, while Falcao’s introduction with a little over 20 minutes to full time drew loud cheers from the home fans.
The Colombian almost added a fifth but for goalkeeper Rob Green’s scrambling recovery save.
After a slow start to this season, Van Gaal believes the emphatic win over the toothless QPR provides the stepping stone for subsequent improvement.
“I said before the game ‘let us make a new start’. That’s important as after 1 September, after the transfer period, we can now work on a team-building process and make ourselves better every week – we have done it, I believe.
“The most important thing from today is that we created goals. In the other matches we were the better team on the pitch but we didn’t make goals. Now we have made four goals and that gives a boost to every player,” he explained.
