The United States is behind terror group Islamic State, this is the belief of many in Iran, reports have said.
The Iranians who hold this belief, according to findings, think the US brough up IS in an effort to diminish Iran’s growing influence in the region.
Last week Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said he considered IS to be an American ploy to get a foothold in Iraq and fight Iran’s ally Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
“We have evidence, we know,” he told a group of clerics, according to The Independent.
The New York Times’ Tehran bureau chief Thomas Erdbrink also cited a number of examples of Iranians’ belief in America’s involvement.
Iranian state television claimed to show images of US Senator John McCain, a right-wing Republican, meeting with Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the caliph of IS.
Ayatollah Khamenei reminded them that al-Qaeda — a creation of the Central Intelligence Agency, Iran has said — and the Taliban were, in the eyes of Iranian intelligence, devised by the West as a counterweight to Iran.
