Ben Affleck butted heads with Bill Maher over Islam when the actor appeared on the latter’s show.
The actor appeared on Real Time With Bill Maher, where Maher and author Sam Harris were arguing that liberals should be free to criticise aspects of Islam without fear of being seen as Islamaphobic.
Harris made a comment on American people having been ‘sold this meme of Islamaphobia.’
Aflfeck retorted: ‘Hold on, are you the person who officially understands the codified doctrine of Islam?’
‘It’s gross. It’s racist.’
Affleck also took issue with the description of Islam as a ‘mother-load of bad ideas’, to which the Gone Girl star replied: ‘It’s just an ugly thing to say.
As the heated exchange went on, he said: ‘How about the more than a billion people who aren’t fanatical, who don’t punish women, who just want to go to school, eat some sandwiches and pray five times a day without doing any of the things that you’re saying.
‘You’re stereotyping. You’re taking all these bad things and you’re painting a whole religion with that same brush.’
He added: ‘Your argument is “black people, you know, they shoot each other.”‘
