A soldier attached to the 423 Battalion, Elele Barrack, in Rivers State, who was working at Onopa area of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State Monday night went out of control and shot his colleague, identified as Staff Sgt. Ishiaku Shuaibu, dead.
According to reports, the soldier, a Lance Corporal, identified as Muazu Haruna, shot his colleague at close range, killing him before help could reach him.
He has reportedly been arrested and taken to the Area Command Division of the Police. He was however later released to the Joint Task Force after an unnamed Captain intervened.
Vanguard quoted an anonymous source as saying the suspect must have acted under the influence of alcohol.
Lt.-Col. Mustapha Anka, Spokesman of the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta confirmed the incident on Tuesday, describing it as most unfortunate.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted sources at the Government House as saying that two other soldiers on duty left the post briefly and the killer soldier capitalised on the opportunity to shoot his colleague.
“He immediately ran away with the rifle and boarded a commercial tricycle popularly known as `Keke NAPEP’ and headed towards Hospital Road.
“The sound of the gun shots attracted the policemen on duty at the Banquet Hall,” a source was quoted as saying.
