Edo Community Records Monumental Loss After Oil Spill

An oil spillage caused by ruptured oil pipe lines of the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), which passed through Ikara Community in Ikpoba Oka Local Government Area of Edo State has led to “monumental loss of aquatic, domestic and agricultural lives.”

The people of the community have therefore sent a Save Our Soul (SOS) message to President Goodluck Jonathan to help clean up the community.

In a message sent to the president, the President General of the community, Mr Lawrence Anirejuoritse Wilbert, and the Chairman of the Elders’ Council, Chief John Eyajamure, also called on NPDC to expedite actions in cleaning up the area.

The community leaders also asked that adequate compensation be given to the community, in line with relevant statutory guidelines.

They however warned the company not to violate or bypass the necessary statutory measures in remedying the plight of the people.
