Dolphins FC’s Emem Eduok and Enyimba’s Mfon Udoh both equaled the record for most goals in a single Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season set by Jude Aneke- then playing for Kaduna United in the 2010-11 campaign- with their 20th strikes of the 2013-14 season.
Eduok grabbed Dolphins only goal after 20 minutes in a 3-1 loss at relegation-threatened Bayelsa United on Sunday; a result which ended the Port-Harcourt side’s title aspirations but increased the forward’s goal tally to a record-equaling 20.
Dolphins will now hope to end the season with a trophy in the Federations Cup final on November 23, when they come up against Enyimba. The winner of the Federation Cup automatically qualifies for the Caf Confederations Cup.
Eduok, had in the midweek, reached another milestone after his six goals against Nembe City at the Liberation Stadium saw him claim recognition for the player with most goal in a single Glo Premier League match- two goals better than the previous four-goal record by the duo of Victor Ezeji and Christian Pyagbara.
In Omoku, Udoh scored twice to achieve his self-set 20-goal target and help the ‘Peoples Elephant’ seal a 2-1 comeback win over Nigeria National League-bound Nembe City; a result which kept the Aba-based outfit well in contention for a seventh NPFL title.
Both Eduok and Udoh will have their chances to add to their respective goal tallies in a ‘clash of goal titans’ when Dolphins hosts Enyimba in a Match Day 37 fixture in Port-Harcourt on November 2nd.
Rangers’ Osaguona Ighodaro and Gbolahan Salami of Warri Wolves are both tied on 16 goals in the Glo Premier League highest goalscorers’ chart, while Bayelsa United’s Peter Ebimobowei is on 15 goals.
