Man City vs Newcastle: Ameobi Bullish, Nasri Returns After Surgery

Sammy Ameobi believes Newcastle United can pull off another shock when they visit Manchester City in a League Cup fourth round match on Wednesday night.

The forward- younger brother of ex-‘Magpies’ striker Shola- made an instant impact within 10 seconds of coming on for Gabriel Obertan on restart at Tottenham Hotspur, as Alan Pardew’s side earned just their second but successive league win on Sunday.

Reigning champions and Capital One Cup holders City knocked Newcastle out of the same competition last term, but the 22-year-old academy product thinks the visiting ‘Toons Armies’ could again be rewarded for their trust, if he and his team-mates could inject the same spirit and belief like they did at White Hart Lane.

“It’s never an easy place to go, Man City, but I’m really looking forward to it,” Sammy told Newcastle’s official website.

“If we can go out with the confidence we had against Tottenham, you never know what can happen.”

Ameobi, whose first-ever Premier League match came at the Etihad Stadium in November 2011, has had to struggle with niggling injury problems over the last couple of seasons, but he is hoping for a new lease of life at St James’ Park.

“Hopefully I can get a good stint of football,” he said. “That’s all I want; injury-free football.

“I’ll keep working, strengthening myself, and hopefully I’ll get that.”

City’s Nasri back for Newcastle

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed midfielder Samir Nasri is available for Wednesday night’s Capital One Cup tie at home to Newcastle United.

Nasri has been out for a month following a groin surgery.
Speaking in his pre-game press conference, the Chilean tactician confirmed that the Frenchman will be included in the squad but says fellow midfielder Frank Lampard remains a doubt, even for Sunday’s Manchester derby.

“Samir Nasri is working normally and he is in the squad list for tomorrow,” Pellegrini said. “Frank Lampard has a muscle injury but all the other players in the squad are fit.

“I don’t think Frank will be fit for the weekend but maybe he can be fit for next week.”

Wednesday’s game against Newcastle heralds a busy week of football for the ‘Citizens’, with the league game at home to Manchester United and a Champions League group stage clash with CSKA Moscow (next week’s Wednesday) on the card.
