Thiago Alcantara has undergone successful knee surgery in Spain, Bayern Munich have confirmed.
The 23-year-old has been been out of action after tearing ligaments in his right knee and he suffered a fresh setback while recuperating from the initial injury in training last week.
The Spaniard, who is set for further six months on the sidelines, preferred to be treated in his home country.
A statement on the Bundesliga champions’ website read: “The operation on his right knee was successful. There were no complications. Nevertheless, the player will not be available for the coming months.”
Dr Roman Cuga performed the operation in Barcelona on Thursday in the presence of a member of Bayern’s own medical team, Dr Lutz Hansel.
