Enyimba international forward Mfon Udoh became the first player to score 21 goals in a single Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season on Sunday after helping his side seal a disappointing point at Dolphins FC.
Udoh’s record-breaking feat happened exactly three years after the previous record of 20 goals was set by Jude Aneke, when the then-Kaduna United player netted a hat-trick against Niger Tornadoes.
Udoh drew the ‘Peoples Elephants’ level on 76th minute after Chidiebere Okolie had opened scoring for Dolphins six minutes into the second half at the Liberation Stadium. The draw was enough to see Enyimba concede a second successive NPFL title to Kano Pillars, who sealed an emphatic 4-0 win over Nembe City.
The Match Day 37 fixture tagged ‘Clash of Two Marksmen’ ended with the home team’s Emem Eduok failing to increase his tally, however; could still improve on his 20 goals when seventh-placed Dolphins travel to Markurdi to play Lobi Stars on the last day of the season (next Sunday) .
Enyimba and Dolphins are also due to clash in the final of this year’s Federation Cup on 23 November.
Udoh now leads the Nigerian league goalscorers’ chart with 21 goals, followed by Eduok on 20. Bayelsa United’s Peter Ebimobowei have 17 goals following his hat-trick against Lobi Stars on Match Day 37. Rangers’ Osaguona Ighodaro and Warri Wolves’ Gbolahan Salami have 16 goals apiece.
