Injured De Jong Out of Uefa Qualifier, Doubtful for Milan Derby

The Netherlands international Nigel de Jong is doubtful for the first Milan derby of the season and will miss Sunday’s Uefa Euro 2016 qualifier against Latvia.

The AC Milan midfielder suffered a hamstring injury during Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Sampdoria and faces a race against fitness to play at the San Siro against Inter Milan on Sunday, November 23.

De Jong was forced to pull out of the Oranje squad ahead of Wednesday’s international friendly against Mexico and will also miss this weekend’s qualifier against Latvia in Amsterdam.

A statement from AC Milan read: “De Jong has left the Holland national team training ground to return to Milan. His condition will be evaluated by the Rossoneri medical team.”

The 29-year-old has scored two goals in ten league appearances for AC Milan this season.

Seventh-placed Milan are winless in four successive Italian Serie A matches ahead of the Milan derby after the international break.
