Gombe United joined Nembe City, Crown FC and Kaduna United to go down the Nigeria league hierarchy on Sunday despite a 4-1 win over Abia Warriors on Sunday.
The ‘Savannah Scorpions’ ended the 2013-14 Glo Premier League season with 50 points, thus sinking down to the second division Nigeria National League (NNL) following a 21-year sojourn in the top-flight.
Nembe City were condemned to their 22nd defeat of the season in Omoku at the hands of Giwa FC. Second-half goals by Gyang Amos, Shuaibu Ibrahim, Ocheme Edoh and Abdulbasit Shittu rubbed salt to Nembe City’s wound. They finished rock-bottom of the table.
Kaduna were beaten 2-1 at home by Rangers despite drawing the first blood on Sunday. Peter Onoja gave the Kaduna hosts an early lead but Onoriode Odah restored parity on 24 minutes before grabbing the winner for Rangers in the 64th minute. Kaduna finished the campaign in 19th place.
Relegated Crown marked their descent from the top-flight with a victory at home to Akwa United, who were already assured of their NPFL status. Onyekachi Okafor brace was complimented by Bode Daniel’s strike as Crown secured a 3-0 win on the last day of the league season.
The quarter of Gombe, Nembe, Crown and Kaduna United will now be replaced by Ranchers Bees, Wikki Tourists, Shooting Stars and Gabros International in the Nigeria Professional football League (NPFL) next season.
It was a final day ditch for threatened NPFL duo of Bayelsa United and FC Taraba, who scraped the drop courtesy of their victories on Sunday.
The ‘Restoration Boys’ came back from a goal down to beat Heartland 2-1 in Owerri and finish the season on 51 points- 15th in the league table.
Taraba also won at Sharks 1-0 to finish 14th on the standings.
