Never Again Will Schools Go On Strike In Nigeria – Shekarau

Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau has promised Nigerians that the era of strike in the country’s education sector was over.

Speaking yesterday during his official visit to Federal Government-owned institutions in Lagos State, Shekarau said that the government had released N500 billion to the education sector for the settlement of pending arrears and allowances.

“By the grace of God, we have seen the end of strikes in our various institutions. The Federal Government started addressing all pending issues in the sector. Over N500 billion has been released to the education sector for this purpose,” the minister said.

Shekarau also said that the government would forward the NEEDS assessment reports to the various governing councils of tertiary institutions for implementation.

The schools visited by Shekarau include the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Yaba College of Technology and the Federal College of Education, Lagos.

The minister commissioned some projects at UNILAG, where he stressed the need for an improvement of Nigeria’s education sector, noting that as the number of students increase, facilities sufficient to cater for their educational needs should be made available.

Shekarau also said that measures were being taken to ensure the ongoing strike by Unity Schools’ teachers in the country was called off.

  1. This is a welcome development, hope measures has been put in place to ensure this money is used judiciously and some form of accountability demanded.

Until we start demanding accountability very little will change. There is a touch of dishonesty in everyone not just in Nigeria but knowing questions would be asked and answers demanded helps to put everyone of us in check. Let the institutions take their responsibilities serious and let us start demanding answers.
