Street sweepers in Ekiti State have appealed to Governor Ayodele Fayose not to relieve them of their jobs following rumours that their salary had been slashed to N5, 000.

In a press briefing on Friday in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, their spokesmen, Ojo Olufemi and Kunle Ayegbusi, who gave the number of the sweepers to be 700, pleaded with Mr. Fayose to maintain the present N10,000 monthly stipend being paid to them.

Ayegbusi, who described the governor as a man of the people, said sacking them would further compound unemployment problem and increase the risk of disease in the state.

He said, “We heard that the Government is planning to reduce the stipend to N5,000 monthly and reduce the working hours from six hours to two to justify the reduction.

“But we are aware that the same work would still be done by our members even within that two hours. We used to allot 200 metres portion of land to each sweeper, which I think they can still do even if the hours’ time is reduced.

“If the government wanted to reduce the working hours and the money, it means there should be reduction in the workload. And if this happens, the government would have to hire more hands and the situation will remain the same.

“We are pleading with the Government to retain our members in order to protect our families and their well-being”, Ayegbusi said.

Olufemi added that the members would continue to discharge their duties with utmost zeal and dedication to promote hygiene in the State.

He said members will not shirk in their responsibilities to keep Ado-Ekiti and Ikere township, where they presently operate clean.

  1. Governor Ayo shouldn’t act like a sycophant. He doesn’t need that. Even if there’s any financial breakdown in the state. And he needs to make amends, I think, the prudent need not be observed on the sweepers at all. Because even at N10,000 per month ,that’s a meager. Let alone slashing to N5000. To me that attitude is wicked. The governor should slash the House of Representatives’ salary and the Permanent secretary’s and other political affiliated body members’ salaries and let’s see if the financial constraint will not be corrected.
Our leaders are all self-centered, they only take the mantle of this leadership to festoon their pockets.
And that’s why the nation is suffering different societal ailments these days.
I pray to governor Fayose not to lead my people in a militaristic way.
I pray that God will help him.(Amen)
