The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has announced the cancellation of the Peoples Democratic Party House of Representatives’ primaries of the Ekiti North Federal Constituency II of Ekiti State held on Saturday.
This was disclosed on Monday by INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ekiti , Alhaji Halilu Pai, through the commission’s public relations officer, Taiwo Gbadegesin.
According to Gbadegesin, the electoral commission did not recognize the primaries conducted and won by Chief Thaddeus Aina as candidate.
He added: “The PDP claimed that there were primaries in the place, but to us in INEC, we believe no primaries was held.
“This commission cannot recognize primaries conducted in the middle of the night as election, because reports by our electoral officers indicated that primaries in the constituency did not begin even as at 8.30pm in the night. So, when was the election conducted?
“We owe it a duty to say the truth now to prevent future backlash. It is the responsibility of this commission to ensure that things are done rightly and on that we stand.”
Other PDP candidates who emerged from the primaries held in Ekiti state were Segun Adekola – Ekiti South 1, Akin Awodumila – Ekiti South 2, Ayodeji Oladimeji – Ekiti Central 1, Olamide J. Oni (Oni Atiba) – Ekiti Central 2 and Kehinde Agboola – Ekiti North 1.
Meanwhile, the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, senatorial primaries were held across the three senatorial districts of the state on Monday under a tensed atmosphere due to the kind political figures involved.
Ekiti North senatorial district was one of the tensed areas as the incumbent, Hon Olubunmi Adetumbi was contesting the seat with experienced politicians like Mr Olusegun Osinkolu and Hon Ranti Adebisi, former Chairman, Ekiti State Local Government Service Commission under ex-governor Kayode Fayemi-led government.
As at the time of compiling this report, the results of the three districts are still being expected.
