The Lagos State government has commenced the distribution of the Lagos State resident cards. The card is a proof that the holder resides in the state and it will help the government in planning, budgeting, as well as the determination of the number of persons to be catered for
The permanent residency cards can now be picked up by those who have registered earlier and had been issued the temporary cards.
Governor Babatunde Fashola calls the exercise a big step into the future. “This is not about today, but about tomorrow. I get embarrassed when figures are read out that in Nigeria, we are 140, 160 or 170 million, depending on who is speaking.
“I usually question how they arrived at those figures. Truth is that if we don’t know how many we are, we cannot plan for us.
“This is about knowing exactly how many people live in Lagos, so that we can adequately plan for them,” the governor said
According to him, because the registration exercise was providing a database of every resident of the state, it would become a veritable tool to track criminals, because of the availability of the bio-data/identities. He noted that developed economies have found it easier to track crimes and criminals because they have such database.
General Manager of Lagos State Residents’ Registration Agency (LASRRA), Olayinka Fashola, re-emphasised the importance of accurate data for planning purposes. She noted that the registration was for all residents of Lagos State, who had lived in Lagos for six months and above.
In order to make the exercise simpler and less stressful, the agency had created an online platform, www.lagosresidents.gov.ng, where residents could register before taking the print-outs to nearest registration centres in the state.
