Emir Of Kano Dispels Rumour Of Impending Marriage To 17-Year-Old Princess

emir of kanoThe Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has dismissed reports in a section of the media and on the internet that he is set to marry a 17-year-old daughter of the Lamido of Adamawa, Alhaji Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Musdafa.

According to the reports, the marriage was aimed at strengthening royal ties between Adamawa and Kano, which dates as far back as the 19th Century.

However, the Emir dispelled the marriage rumours while responding to questions sent by SaharaReporters via text messages and routed through one of his aides.

Sanusi II, although born into royalty, is considered by many as a cosmopolitan traditional ruler. The rumors of his impending marriage to a 17-year-old girl came under heavy criticism from a cross section of Nigerians, who viewed the development as an endorsement of child-marriage.

Responding to a question about marriage between adult men and underage girls, the Emir, however, explained that he fully supports the right of children not to get forcibly married before attaining the constitutionally stipulated age of 18 years.

He further stated that he has not and will not contract a marriage with any woman under 18.

The Emir of Kano said the stories making the rounds were only meant to unveil his intentions even as he did not rule put the possibility of marrying a fourth wife.

He, therefore, advised people to wait to see the real age of his wife if he decides to contract another marriage.
