Screenshot (280)The family of Professor Ahmad Mustapha Falaki, the director, Institute of Agricultural Research (IAR) of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, who was slain while returning from Bauchi State on Saturday, has faulted the police version of his death.

In a petition titled: “Extra-Judicial killing of Professor Ahmad Musatapha Falaki” sent to the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, the family said based upon the accounts of survivors of the attack and other witnesses, the account given by the police was false.

The police had claimed that before it could reach the late Falaki to rescue him, a mob, comprising of villagers, had stabbed him to death. The account contradicts that given by the deceased’s brother, Malam Abbas Mustapha, who, said the police watched as the mob attacked them, despite identifying themselves as not belonging to the Boko Haram sect.

According to the petition signed by Aminu Mustapha Daneji, the late professor’s family wants the Inspector General of Police to investigate the killing, noting that they suspected extra-judicial killing.

“It should be thoroughly investigated and any person who has a hand in it be appropriately dealt with as provided by law. The report of the investigation should be made available to members of the family and his employers”, it said.

The family asked the police to also retract their earlier claim that the deceased and the others were members of Boko Haram.
