Nigeria Pull off Surprise Win at the African U-19 Cricket Championship

Nigeria on Monday recorded its first win at the ongoing African Under-19 cricket championship in Tanzania.

The Nigerian Cricket team defeated their Ugandan counterpart by 141 to 128 runs in their third match of the ongoing championship.

Musa Ehizoje, the Head, Media Unit of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), who confirmed the result of the match to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said it was Nigeria’s first win over Uganda in any cricket tournament.

Ehizoje said: “Nigeria batted first and scored 141 runs in 31 over, while Uganda had 128 runs all out.”

He expressed optimism that the Nigeria team would be in a strong position to clinch a World Cup berth if it wins its remaining two matches against hosts Tanzania and Botswana.

The game against Tanzania is scheduled for 18 February while that against Botswana comes up the following day.

Nigeria lost its first two matches to Kenya and Namibia on Feb. 14 and 15 respectively before Monday’s surprise win over Uganda.

Winner of the championship automatically qualify for the 2016 International Cricket Council (ICC) Under-19 World Cup billed for Bangladesh.

The runners-up will proceed to a global qualifier for the sixth place at the U-19 World Cup.

Participating countries at the ongoing African U-19 championship are hosts Tanzania, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Namibia and Botswana. The championship, which started in Dar es Salaam on February 13 will end on February 20.
