Mourinho ‘Optimistic’ Chelsea Will Win Premier League

Jose Mourinho has predicted Chelsea will win the Premier League title a couple of days after their Uefa Champions League elimination.

The Blues are at home to top-four chasing Southampton on Sunday and currently lead second-placed Manchester City by five points with a game in hand.

“The people who went out last Wednesday are the same who’ve been top of the league since day one,” Mourinho said in his pre-match press conference at Cobham on Friday.

“They are the same people who won the Capital One Cup and the same people who are going to win the Premier League.”

Chelsea lost out of the Champions League on away goals following a 2-2 home draw with French champions Paris St-Germain on Wednesday night.

The Portuguese said he held a meeting with his players to discuss their ouster at Stamford Bridge, adding that that chapter was now “closed”.

The 52-year-old added: “The only thing to speak about the Champions League is that if we win the Premier League we are top seeds next season.

“What we can do now for our club is to win the Premier League. Our situation is good. Everybody would love to be in our position.

“If we win the Premier League and the League Cup it’s a brilliant season.”

And with 11 matches left till the end of the English top flight, Mourinho reiterated his satisfaction with Chelsea’s current position in the title race than at the start of the campaign when every team was on equal footing.

“It is more difficult to start the season with the same points as everybody then to play now with an advantage. We have five points more than Manchester City and nine points more than Arsenal. In this moment it is easier.”

Chelsea are unbeaten at Stamford Bridge in the league this season and will have Nemanja Matic back after serving his two-match suspension.

Mourinho issued a clean slate of injury concerns ahead of the Saints’ visit, stressing “everybody wants to play.”

“My daughter said to me after the (PSG) game, maybe we will have a few injuries and I asked why,” Mourinho narrated.

“She said because we lost, because some people are sad and I told her I don’t believe that. We have zero injuries.”
