Senegal Name Ex-International Cisse New Coach

Former Senegal international Aliou Cisse has been appointed as head coach of the Teranga Lions, the country’s football federation has announced in a statement.

The former Birmingham City and Portsmouth midfielder has signed a four-year contract, to be reviewed after the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

He succeeds Alan Giresse, who left after his team failed to advance from the group stages at the recent Equatorial Guinea finals.

Cisse, 38, has served as assistant coach of the Senegal national side and also was part of the coaching staff for the 2012 Olympic.

He began his football career at French side LOSC Lille and had spells with Paris St-Germain and Montepellier before captaining the West Africans at the 2002 Fifa World Cup in Japan and South Korea, where the team reached the quarter-finals.
