Sharks FC 0-0 Sunshine Stars: Akure Gunners & Blue Angels in Dour Draw

Sharks FC were held by Sunshine Stars in Port-Harcourt as the opening 180 minutes of the new Nigeria Professional football League (NPFL) ended without a goal.

Dolphins FC and Kwara United had earlier battled to a goalless draw at the Liberation Stadium- venue of both opening day double header- before Sharks-Sunshine followed suit.

It rained in the second half of Saturday’s second fixture but not goals as both sides huffed and puffed but to no avail.

The Akure Gunners had the first chance of the game when James Aiyeyemi in goal for the home team saved Dayo Ojo’s powerful shot from 35 yards.

Sharks’ Ifeanyi Inyam, unmarked in the goal area, headed over the bar from Bode Daniel’s flick on in the 18th minute.

Daniel Ojo then collected a poor clearance by Aiyeyemi, but his ensuing long-range effort missed target by a glimmer.

Tunde Adeniji’s 28th-minute stylist flick failed to trouble Aiyeyemi, and Sharks skipper Odinga Odinga’s lobbed effort four minutes later beat goalkeeper Danladi Isah and unfortunately sailed over the bar.

Sunshine’s Mutiu Adegoke came close to scoring from a deadball in the 38th minute but his effort was saved by Aiyeyemi.

Daniel could have opened scoring just into the second half but scooped the ball over the bar from close range from a low cross into the box.

Ibrahim Salawu skyrocketed over the bar after an impressive build-up play involving Chima Akas, Joseph Nathaniel and Inyam.

The match turned a cagey affair in the closing 20 minutes after it had begun chucking it down. There was little to separate both teams after 90 minutes as the Glo Premier League awaits its first goal heading into Sunday’s fixtures.
