Vermaelen Returns to Training at Barca

Thomas Vermaelen’s trained with his Barcelona team-mates for the first time on Wednesday since undergoing surgery on a hamstring problem on 2 December, 2014.

The former Arsenal and Ajax centre-back, 29, has only featured in a friendly match since his £15m move to the Camp Nou last summer. His first-team debut has been blighted by the injury he sustained during last year’s World Cup.

The Belgian, who completed the training session and also took part in other exercises, is now likely to play some part in the latter part of the current campaign.

“I’m following the medical advice and so far, so good,” he said. “When one is a sportsperson, you want to return to activity as soon as possible. I feel that I have the support of the squad and the club.

“It’s great being able to run again. I’m also delighted at being able to train outdoors as opposed to being alone in the gym. I want to come back as strong as possible.

“I’d like to thank the cub and medical staff who have done a fantastic job.”

La Liga leaders Barcelona lead second-placed Real Madrid by four points. They are through to the final of the Copa del Rey and the last 8 of the Champions League.
