Premier League club Manchester United have been handed a leverage in their reported pursuit of Ilkay Gundogan after Borussia Dortmund confirmed the German midfielder will not be extending his contract beyond the end of next season.
United are said to have shown interest in the 24-year-old, who joined the Westfalians from Nuremberg in 2011. He is under contract at the Signa Iduna Park until June 2016.
“Borussia Dortmund and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan will not agree on a June 2016 extension,” Dortmund tweeted on Thursday. “Gundogan has decided not to renew his contract valid until that date.”
The Germany international won the Bundesliga title and the German Cup as Dortmund completed a League and Cup double in 2012.
He and Sebastien Kehl scored in a penalty shootout victory over Bayern which sent Dortmund into the final of the German Cup on Tuesday night. Gundogan has scored three times in 26 appearances this season in all competitions.
