Presidential Elections: Why I Conceded Defeat – Jonathan

Goodluck Jonathan

Several reasons have been given as to why President Goodluck Jonathan conceded defeat to Muhammadu Buhari in the March 28 presidential election, but the real reason why he made the legendary concession has been revealed by Jonathan.

Speaking, yesterday, while responding to remarks by the French ambassador to Nigeria, Denis Guaer, who commended him for setting a record of humility, patriotism and courage in safeguarding the democratic process in Nigeria and Africa for which he will always be remembered, Jonathan said he conceded defeat so as to avert a collective tragedy.

“Nigeria is not only an economic power in the world today, but also a great democratic example. And it is all by your effort, Mr. President. The last elections and your response was truly a great achievement and you will always be remembered for it,” the French ambassador said.

President Jonathan responded saying: “Since I assumed duty, I have been involved in quelling political crises in some African countries and I know what they passed through and what some are still going through. If you scuttle a system for personal ambition, it becomes a collective tragedy.

“You need to have a nation before you can have an ambition. It should always be the nation first. You don’t have to scuttle national progress for personal ambition. Democracy has to be nurtured to grow. Strong democratic institutions are the backbone and future of our democracy. They must be protected and nurtured. As for me, as a matter of principle, it is always the nation first.

“President Francois Hollande was our guest in Nigeria during the celebration of Nigeria’s centenary. He has been very supportive of the country in the fight against terrorism. I expect that the same warmth and goodwill will be extended to the incoming government.

“I expect that France will continue to work with the new administration, especially on issues of terrorism. The United Nations has been supportive as well. Our troops, supported by regional forces, have done very well in fighting the terrorists in recent times. What we need now is support to help our people get back their lives,” he said.

  1. My president, you are a leader that we can hardly see the type in the entire Africa, let alone Nigeria. Everybody saw the extent of the gang up against you, how election was systematically vis-a-vis electronically rigged against you by Jega’s INEC of our generation. You have all security chiefs loyal to you and ever ready to scuttle the system, but you resisted all and conceded defeat, hence congratulated your opponent. We are proud of you. The question now is that, what of if it were Buhari that was defeated? Would he concede, congratulate you and go ahead to stop his almajeri supporters from voilence activities? Will Baboons and Dogs suck blood as he promised or not? These are few of the many questions to be answered by these people with born to rule mentality. They believe that resorting to violence is their birthright portion.

    • Most places where election appeared to have been rigged, it was done by the hulligans loyal to the PDP. Election has now been rescheduled in those places. Don’t come here to vindicate the PDP, because Jonathan, did what is expected of him as defeated candidate. Even though it was a military era, Obasanjo handed over the baton to then president elect, Alhaji Shehu Shagari. In my own perspective while what Jonathan, did is comendable, there is nothing new in what he did. What he did should not be used to glace over numerous unpardonable atrocities, mistakes, and out rite looting of the treasury, while many Nigerian people and their children went to bed Hungary throughout his tenure.

      • Omoegba, Your thinking and talk like typical village man that never pass primary 6, can you remember what happen in 1996 June, why IBB did not handover power to the president-elect of that time…please go back to history before you can talk in the public…Fuck u and ur coconut head mouth…

  2. thank you Mr President for saving the country by accepting defeat, let APC also accept defeat in rivers, akwa ibom, ekiti and ondo,if not that thing that Jonathan is avoiding will come to play and heaven will not fail.

  3. I hail president jonathan for his loyalty and sincerety in the service of mankind Jesus christ the son God first show us the example kudos gej

  4. Thank you Mr President! However, Obasanjo defeated Falae of AD and he conceded defeat, so also Buhari to Obasanjo, Yardua and Goodluck. The presidential election was free and fair so, why won’t he concede defeat when he was roundly beaten incumbency or not?

    • Basket mouth..David S. Olusola…U better go and study history well before u talk un-necessary in the public…nonsenses..

  7. PEOPLE PLAN FOR GOOD AND DESIRE GOOD BUT THEY DONT DO GOOD,EVEN WHEN THEY SEE GOOD,THEY BYE-PASS IT BECAUSE THEY FAIL TO RECOGNISE. “GEJ”IS A GOOD MAN BUT SOME NIGERIANS DIDN’T RECOGNISE IT. 9. the real free and fair was conducted and the winner was announced, what is a big deal there??? Why must give GEJ kudos when he knew that he was voraciously beaten almost all over the state. this is my first time of seeing free and fair in Nigeria whereas the one they have been doing before was nomination instead of election…. there is nothing at all praise of.he must accept defeat because the distance between his votes and that of Buhari is very far. if it’s compulsory for me to praise and give kudos to somebody, I believe JEGA must be a rightful person..not even GEj.. bewise and stop that shit..u guys are just saying to wipe away d shame on u that supported him,

especially Domjay wey have head but lacking IQ, d man u have been criticizing of since last year have won at last.go and die with ur criticism..

  11. you know why I am laughing, some people haven’t seen war. And it’s little thing that triggers it off. it will only take him to say no, I don’t accept this results. The next is killing and crisis in the North.

  12. U are indeed a true child of God. But let me ask all those 1.something to 2million votes for apc in almost all d northern states why didn’t i see it during d last election or they have gone back to sambisa forest. Let d Creator of heaven and earth judge every seat that was rigged bcos they will not have peace, Amen.

  13. Our democracy needs to grow into maturity &GEJ by his action is nurturing it. He is a democrat. He is commended. We should all have this sense of nation building.

  14. The most corrupt administration Nigeria has ever had. GEJ enough of looting and missing money. Go and enjoy your illgotten wealth @ Otuoke. Conced or not, you ll be remember for corruption.

  15. A leader must not rule without insult from the followers. That is not to say that he is bad. Many Nigerians are against GEJ but very soon we will start making references top his administration for at least one or two things Mr president. God is happy with you for proving to the word that His seed is in you. God bless you Mr president.

  16. a leader is he whose followers obey and listen to, one who value the life of his follower, one who does not use the blood of his subject to get to the throne. Jona is a leader, he has proved his love for Nigeria, he lost a winner, a man of peace God bless Jona
