Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Humels has snubbed Manchester United’s approach and will remain with the Westfalians next season, according to reports in Germany.
The centre-back has told Dortmund director Michael Zorc he will see out his contract which ends in 2017, according to German Magazine Kicker.
Meaning coach Louis van Gaal may have to look elsewhere to replenish his struggling back-line, which has conceded 37 goal- the second highest tally among the top-four teams- so far this season.
“It was legitimate that Mats was thinking about his future but I have always pointed out that he is firmly part of our plans,” Zorc is quoted as saying on Kicker.
United have already tied Dutch winger Memphis Depay to a three-year deal.
The Old Trafford club secured a fourth-place finish last week, following their 1-1 home draw with Arsenal.

The Metro is reporting that Manchester United and Argentine centre-back Nicolas Otamendi have reached agreement on a possible transfer.
Otamendi has reportedly agreed in principle on contract and all that’s left in the process is a deal between the defender’s club Valencia and the 20-time English champions.
Man Utd Dare Knock on Liverpool’s Door for Sterling
Manchester a United have made enquiries about 20-year-old Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling, according to The Telegraph.
The Reds have not made secret their desire to keep the England international and, as expected, instantly rebuffed United’s advance.
Sterling has put a new £100,000-per-week Liverpool contract on offer, and had said in a recent interview he wants to “win trophies.”
Liverpool will not be competing in the Champions League next season. The Reds have not won a silverware in three years.
Liverpool to announce new five-year deal for Ibe
Liverpool are set to announce a new five-year contract for winger Jordon Ibe according to the Sun (subscription required).
The winger will sign a deal worth £35m and could earn over £25,000 per week.
Ibe broke into Liverpool’s first team under manager Brendan Rodgers and has been touted as a replacement for the wantaway Raheem Sterling, who is on the verge of telling the Merseyside outfit management he wants a move away from the club.
The development will keep the 19-year-old at Anfield until 2019.
Benitez to Real Madrid, Ancelotti for the boots
Napoli boss Rafael Benitez is top candidate for the Real Madrid job as the Los Merengues are set to announce Carlo Ancelotti’s departure next week.
Several reports claim management of the Santiago Bernebeu club met this week and have agreed to relieve the Italian tactician of his responsibilities.
Benitez had successful spell with Valencia, where he won successive La Liga titles between 2001 and 2003 and the Uefa Cup in 2003.
Madrid, who will face Getafe at the Bernabeu in the last game of the league season this weekend, will end the season without a trophy.
Benitez is also a reported target for Premier League club West Ham.
