Unidentified gunmen yesterday killed two policemen and abducted two Lebanese in Onuegbum, Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The policemen were attached to Pache Construction Company, employers of the abducted Lebanese.
According to reports, about eight gunmen arrived in the community at 12.20 p.m. in two speedboats.
They reportedly besieged the sand dredging site and shot repeatedly into the air to scare away passers-by and other workers in the area.
The two policemen tried to stand up to them as they shot back but they were killed in the process.
Spokesman for Bayelsa State Police Command, Mr Astimin Butswat, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). He said that the corpses of the policemen had been deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre for autopsy.
He also said the two abducted Lebanese had been identified as Sarki Abi Chmouli and Ibrahim Abi Pherem.
The spokesperson added that the marine component of the Police has been alerted, as well as the Joint Task Force and the Navy.
