Luis Enrique Extends His Barca Contract Till 2017

Luis Enrique has sign a one-year contract extension at Barcelona, according to president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

The Catalan boss and former captain led the La Liga club to a league, Copa del Rey and Champions League treble in his first season after succeeding Gerardo Martinez in May 2014.

“The treble symbolises more than any other thing, the unity of the Barcelona family,” Bartomeu said at a press conference.

Speaking to Catalunya Radio, the club chief added: “I have no doubt regarding Luis Enrique’s continuity. He is under contract and has done a magnificent job.

“I don’t see any impediments for him to continue in a team who have started a winning cycle. I see him as being very enthusiastic. If I am re-elected as president, one of the things I will do is offer Luis Enrique a contract extension.”

The former Celta Vigo and Roma coach, 45, said after the Baulgranas’ Champions League triumph that his position will be decided following Saturday’s 3-1 win over Juventus in the Berlin showdown.

The coach came under pressure early this season, after home defeat to Real Sociedad- a game in which he chose to bench star players Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Bartomeu told Sport: “There is no reason to break our contract with Enrique after he earned full marks for this season.”

Bartomeu also confirmed that the club are “closely monitoring” Juve midfielder Paul Pogba.

He said: “Pogba is an iconic player at Juventus and has a contract there- we have not tried to sign him but we are closely monitoring his progress.”
