Phil Jones has signed a new contract at Manchester United expected to keep him at the club until 2019 with an option for a further year.
The 23-year-old impressed Dutch boss Louis van Gaal last season at the heart of the Old Trafford club’s defense, making 22 appearances as the Red Devils finished fourth.
Van Gaal, said: “He is a talented footballer with great versatility and can play in a number of positions.
“Phil is a relatively young defender who is developing all the time. He missed some of last season due to injury but I was impressed by his professionalism and attitude during those periods.”
Jones said: “I am delighted to have signed a new deal. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here so far and am looking forward to continuing my development as a player.
“This a great club to be part of and I cannot wait to start the new campaign. I would like to thank the manager, coaching staff and fans for their continued support.”
Jones joined United from Blackburn Rovers on a five-year deal for a reported £16.5m fee in June 2011. He made his competitive debut the following month, coming on as a second-half substitute in an FA Community Shield win over neighbours Manchester City.
He has gathered 128 appearances in all competitions with the club and won the Premier League title in 2013.
